The City of Columbia is located about 45 miles south of Nashville in Maury County, Middle Tennessee and is the seat of Maury County. As of 2011, Columbia’s population is 35,856 people with a population growth of 8.50% since 2000.
Incorporated in 1817, Columbia is the ancestral home of the eleventh president of the United States, James K. Polk. The Polk home is located just two blocks from the center of town.
The city is also the home of the national headquarters for the Sons of Confederate Veterans and home to Tennessee’s first two-year college, Columbia State Community College, established in 1966. President Lyndon B. Johnson and his wife Lady Bird Johnson arrived to dedicate the new campus on March 15, 1967.
