Gallatin is a city in located in Sumner County, Middle Tennessee. As of 2011, Gallatin’s population is 30,187 people. Since 2000, the city has had a population growth of 30.05%. Gallatin has a Mayor-Council government.
The town was named after Albert Gallatin, Secretary of Treasury to presidents Thomas Jefferson and James Madison.
Sumner County is second oldest county in Middle Tennessee and named for Revolutionary War soldier Colonel Jethro Sumner. Gallatin was established in 1802 as the permanent county seat of Sumner.
Gallatin was primarily agricultural until mid-20th century. By 1970, industrialization resulted in only half of the county population being considered rural. In 1992, Hendersonville surpassed Gallatin as the largest town in the county, though Gallatin remains the county seat.
Gallatin is also home to Volunteer State Community College, the largest two-year college in Tennessee and is considered a bedroom commuter suburb of the City of Nashville, located approximately 28 miles from Gallatin.
